Study Task 7 - Exaggeration

Exaggeration is meant to enhance a character or object's movements, emotion or appeal and in this task, we were needed to produce five short abstract animations to demonstrate our understanding of  this.

Bubble

Whack

Bleep Bloop

Shape

Swirl

What worked well:
  • The timing and exaggeration in the first three animations
  • Animating the 'Bleep Bloop' animation at 48fps to synchronise the sound correctly.

What could be improved:
  • Timing/syncing of the 'Shape' animation felt off despite the use of a dope sheet, retrospectively because the sound was mapped to the wrong frame rate which I didn't realise until the post production phase.
  • The 'Swirl' animation ended up being time consuming due to trial and error in determining the correct spacing for the in-betweens as I was trying to incorporate easing.

Study Task 6 - Solid Drawing

Solid Drawing refers to applying form, weight, volume and solidity to a drawing to make it more three dimensional and in this task we were asked to develop our understanding of solid drawing through multiple observational drawings of people going about their daily lives.

Collaboration of solid drawings

I think the hardest part of this task was trying to find anyone who would keep a pose for a full two minutes - the majority of my sketches were done over a few seconds because of this.

As someone who has never worked with lines of action before though, I do feel that there was progressive improvement over my drawings throughout this task and that I started to get the hang of capturing the basic poses. This is something I'd be happy to try to improve in my own time.
